Rival sues Gus Dur, holds own congress
Dismissed National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman Muhaimin Iskandar officially opened his camp's extraordinary meeting Friday afternoon in Jakarta, hours after filing a lawsuit against the party's rival faction led by Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid.
In his opening speech, Muhaimin said the meeting was intended to consolidate all the elements within the party.
"The meeting intends to cleanse the party from bad influences," he said, adding that these negative elements had prevented the party from modernizing.
Muhaimin, who is also a deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, said he welcomed his uncle, PKB chief patron Gus Dur, to attend his camp's meeting.
"I have asked some kyai (clerics) to visit Gus Dur and invite him to attend this meeting," he said.
The meeting was held just a day after the Gus Dur-led PKB concluded a three-day extraordinary meeting at an Islamic boarding school, or pesantren, in Parung, Bogor, with PKB lawmaker Ali Masykur Musa elected as new party chairman.
An Islamic boarding school in East Jakarta refused to host the extraordinary meeting of Muhaimin's camp, which was then moved to the Mercure Hotel at the Ancol amusement park in North Jakarta.
Former PKB secretary-general Muhammad Lukman Edy, who is the current state minister for disadvantaged regions and a Muhaimin loyalist, said the Ancol meeting was being attended by 31 of 33 provincial party executives.
He said the meeting would elect a new chief patron and chairman of the party.
Abdul Kadir Karding, a PKB politician who supports Muhaimin, said some party executives who were present in Parung also were attending the Ancol meeting.
He said Muhaimin's camp filed a lawsuit against Gus Dur and Ali Masykur on Friday morning.
The lawsuit accuses Gus Dur and Ali of illegally holding an extraordinary meeting. It also rejects the dismissal of Muhaimin as PKB chairman and Lukman Edy as party secretary-general.
The PKB, the fifth-largest faction at the House, has been split into two rival factions since Muhaimin was ousted as party chairman earlier this month at the behest of Gus Dur.
Gus Dur's daughter Zannuba Arifah Chafsoh Rahman, better know as Yenny Wahid, is an influential figure in her father's faction.
The conflict intensified when both camps took registration forms at the General Elections Commission (KPU).
Both camps are seeking to register with the KPU and the Law and Human Rights Ministry to contest the 2009 general elections.
After being elected new PKB, Ali said he would immediately register the party's new executive board with the ministry.
On Friday, PKB legislator Nursyahbani Katjasungkana, from the Muhaimin camp, went to the justice ministry demanding it not allow Ali to register the board.
The KPU has urged parties with split leadership -- including the PKB -- to resolve their conflict before May 12, the deadline for parties to register for next year's national elections. (alf)
